It’s only December, but NRL and AFL clubs are already grappling with injury concerns

It is meant to be the festive season, but NRL and AFL clubs have been forced to deal with injuries to key players three months out from the start of their respective seasons.

Key points:

  • The Titans’ David Fifita sustained a partial tear of his pectoral
  • He will undergo surgery on Wednesday
  • Dom Sheed has a “hot spot” in his foot

In the NRL, star Gold Coast forward David Fifita sustained a partial tear of his pectoral and is in doubt for round one of the 2024 premiership.

Fifita suffered the injury on Monday and a scan on Tuesday revealed the extent of the damage.

He had a knee clean-out after the 2023 season and was forced to withdraw from Tonga’s three-Test tour of England as a result.

The 23-year-old will undergo surgery on Wednesday. He had been in the rehab group since he returned to training and had done a minimal amount of field work.

The Titans are hoping Fifita can be fit for their home round-one clash with St George Illawarra.

In the AFL, West Coast premiership hero Dom Sheed has a “hot spot” in his foot and will be eased through the Eagles’ preseason.

After playing just one match in 2022 and missing eight matches this year, Sheed has again been sidelined after hurting his foot on Monday.

At the Eagles’ training camp in the West Australian town of Dunsborough, the 28-year-old was relegated to signing autographs with his left leg in a moon boot.

The Eagles have confirmed Sheed, as well as recently drafted forward Archer Reid (knee), have been placed on the injury list for an indefinite period.

West Coast’s injury list has been the worst in the AFL in recent times, as the once-proud club has won just five matches across the last two seasons.
