The life of Australian football great Ron Barassi will be honoured at a state memorial service next month at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
The legendary player and coach died aged 87 from complications following a fall.
Barassi was the first Australian rules player to be inaugurated into the Australian Football Hall of Fame with the status of “legend”.
He won 10 premierships as a player and coach for Melbourne, Carlton and North Melbourne over the course of his career.
The Victorian government on Thursday confirmed Barassi’s life would be celebrated at a state memorial service at 11am on Friday, November 10.
The government said it was “fitting to gather at the MCG where Ron so often played and coached the game”.
Family, friends, supporters and other members of the public will be invited to attend the service.
Premier Jacinta Allan paid tribute to Barassi’s contribution to the sport.
“Ron Barassi was a sporting icon — player, coach and mentor — who reshaped the game and leaves behind an enormous legacy,” she said.
“He will be remembered for his leadership, honesty, integrity, humility, generosity, and courage.”
Details of the service, including how members of the public can register to attend, will be released closer to the event.
